The Third Floor Replay: Doctor Strange

05.02.2022 — Categories: , ,

04.29.22 – One week away from the debut of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness! As our team looks forward to this new release in the MCU alongside audiences worldwide, let’s look back at some of our favorite moments with Marvel’s Doctor Strange.…

“Who are you in this vast multiverse, Mr. Strange?”   – Ancient One to Doctor Strange in Doctor Strange (2016).

Upon meeting the Ancient One for the first time Stephen Strange is launched on a mind-trip through time and space in Doctor Strange (2016).  Previs was part of the filmmaking process used to visualize the “Magical Mystery Tour” story beat.

05.02.22 – Reflecting today on the Mirror Dimension!  Scenes within a twisting, shifting New York City were a memorable facet of Marvel’s Doctor Strange (2016).

“The Mirror Dimension. You can’t affect the real world in here.”  – Kaecilius to Doctor Strange in Doctor Strange (2016).

To help realize the unique landscape of a Manhattan turned askew, shots were visualized before filming and during post production. (See plate photography and postvis above.)

05.03.22 –  Mystic arts mastery!  In multiple MCU scenes from 2016 to 2019, Doctor Strange acts as a protector of both earthly sanctums and the Time Stone.

“All you need to do is focus. Visualize. See the destination in your mind. Look beyond the world in front of you. Imagine every detail.” – Karl Mordo to Strange during training, Doctor Strange (2016).

TTF artists worked with MCU filmmakers and across departments to depict ideas and filming plans for storytelling effects surrounding Doctor Strange, seen here in Hong Kong previs and Sanctum Sanctorum stairway techvis from Doctor Strange (2016).

05.04.22 – As the conflict with Thanos unfolds in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, Strange’s astral abilities influence various character trajectories and courses of events.

“Allow me to help you…” Stephen Strange to Thor, Doctor Strange (2016) post-credits stinger.

Showing Strange’s signature powers and use of magical artifacts like the Eye of Agamotto and the Cloak of Levitation was a key part of the visualization team’s collaborative work on scenes in the Infinity Saga films.  (Previs above from Doctor Strange 2016.)

05.05.22 – In a staggering moment in Avengers: Infinity War, Doctor Strange does some visualization work of his own – finding 14,000,506 million losing outcomes but only one in which the heroes can win.

“If I tell you what happens, it won’t happen” – Stephen Strange to Tony Stark, Avengers: Endgame (2019)

This Endgame previs gives a sense of look, feel and action for the moment when the team hopes to beat the odds by traveling back through the Quantum Tunnel.
