Maleficent: Mistress of Evil

10.17.2019 — Categories: , , ,

Artists from THE THIRD FLOOR, headed by Andrew Honacker, stepped into the magical Moors for Disney sequel Maleficent: Mistress of Evil. Working under the direction of Joachim Ronning, THE THIRD FLOOR’s visualization team created previs, techvis and postvis shots which enabled the exploration of various story beats.

The film, which has been described as a “fierce fairy tale embracing the joy of being uniquely individual,” follows Maleficent’s path to redemption and the discovery that she is not alone in the world. One of the biggest challenges for visualization was working out camera angles and pacing that would best balance the emotional aspect of Maleficent’s pain and fragility with her power.

THE THIRD FLOOR collaborated closely with VFX Supervisor Gary Brozenich in designing narrative and action beats: “THE THIRD FLOOR’s teams were all strong and their creative contribution end to end was exactly what we needed,” he stated.  “No task was too large or ask too great. I take my hat off to all the teams and especially the visualization supervisors. Maleficent 2 would not be the same film without them”.
